WHAT'S
HAPPENING ON THE GREEN SIDE OF THINGS?
BUKIT TIMAH BIKE TRAIL MAINTENANCE,
Saturday 6 March 2004
Calling all bikers who love our mountain bike
trails!!!
The Bukit Timah cycling trails was
built and maintained by the National Parks (NParks) to allow for cyclists to
enjoy the experience of riding in nature. Compare this to many other places,
where local cycling trails are built and maintained by the local cycling clubs.
Some of which members put in hours of maintenance work each week to make the
trails their own.
Roughly 2 years back, Singapore had
its first BT Trail maintenance cooperative effort between National Parks and
volunteer cyclists. It was a wonderful effort by the public to take
co-ownership of our natural resources. Through the effort of individuals, 2
sections of the BT trail was repaired. However, the greater benefit lay in the
opening of the line of communication between Nparks and the cycling
public. Cyclists were invited to take part in the future planning and
working on new trails, as well as encouraged to continue to provide feedback and
labour to build up the cycling trails in Bukit Timah. Nparks wants the cycling
trails in BT to be something built and designed by cyclists, for cyclists.
Lack of organisational manpower led the volunteer effort to be put on
hold indefinitely. However, some cyclists appreciate the significance of a
volunteer trail maintenance program and are more than willing to pitch in when
the opportunity arises.
The Bukit Timah Trail Maintenance Project
is back on track again this year. The first of two Bukit Timah Volunteer
Trail Maintenance Projects would be held shortly on 6 March (Saturday).
It is just around the corner, but happens to be the best period to be working on
the trails this year.
There are quite a
few sites designated to be worked on.
Those who are interested to put
something back into the cycling community, please send an e-mail to legal@cycling.org.sg putting down
your 1) Name, 2) email, 3) contact number.
Note: The more trail crew
there are, the more sites we can work on. We can even tackle the more ambitious
sites and really make a difference in the way the Bukit Timah trails ride.
This event is brought to you by SACA and NParks, and supported
by Togoparts.com and Singapore Mountain Bike Forum, and run entirely
by bikers like you and me. If you would like to donate to this
cause or know of any other kind sponsors who may wish to do so, kindly contact
legal@cycling.org.sg.
