A Cyclist's Experience - Noberto Cordova
Dear All,
Every now and then, we receive a reminder to be cautious on the
road while riding our bikes. From time to time we learn of a friend,
or acquaintance, involved in a mishap along our
limited cycling routes. Of my 4 years of riding in Singapore, it's
the first time I’ve heard news of
a fatal accident involving a cyclist. This happened over National
Day weekend, along the
East Coast Service Road. For Roadies, Triathletes, and occasional
Mountain Bikers, on route to Pulau Ubin, this stretch of road is
all too familiar...
At the end of the East Coast Service Road, heading in the direction
of the Airport Road, there is a slight incline, where we normally
turn right into on-coming traffic. It was at this blind corner,
where a fellow Filipino cyclist, lost his life to an on-coming cement
truck. I was told he died instantly. His name was Norberto Cordova.
A husband, and a father to a year old baby,
I’m sure he was a good man. Truly a great loss to family,
relatives, and friends...
Let Norbie's demise, not only remind us to be cautious while cycling,
but also, let it remind us that we are human. It is common for us
to rely on our own strength... Trusting in our skills and abilities,
and not acknowledging that anything can happen. Let us always be
prepared, and not take unnecessary risks while we're out there.
Norbie's death is truly a tragedy, yet let it not be in vain. Let
us all learn from the experience, and move on as better individuals...
To the family, relatives, and friends of Norbie... My deepest condolences.
