 About the Singapore National Mountainbike Championships 2006

The Singapore National Mountainbike Championship 2006 marks the fourth year that SACA is holding a national level championship! The Inaugural Schools Mountainbike Championship was held in 2003 as part of the Second Annual Subaru Mountainbike Race 2003 in Sentosa. The Second Schools Mountainbike Championship was held a year later in 2004 as part of the Third International Mountainbike Race 2004 also on the Sentosa mountain bike trail. Last year, the National Championships (Elite) Championships 2005 was held in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Mountainbike Trail. And this year, the national championship takes place at a brand new trail just waiting for you to take on its challenge - the Kent Ridge Mountainbike Trail!

This race offers a platform for budding mountain bike enthusiasts to prove that they have what it takes to be a future SEA Games medallist! It is also open to foreign residents and foreigners visiting Singapore, as well as bikers who want a taste of a brand new mountain bike trail in Singapore, easily up for the running as being the toughest off-road mountain bike trail in Singapore!

So what are you waiting for? Mark Sunday 23 July 2006 in your calendar!

 About the Kent Ridge Mountain Bike Trail

Kent Ridge Park is a 47 ha park managed by Singapore National Parks Board. Located on Vigilante Drive off South Buona Vista Road, it can be accessed via Vigilante Drive, Science Park Drive and Pepys Road.

One of the last battles for Singapore was fought on this hill which dominated the harbour and the British military depots in the Ayer Rajah area. A plaque was installed at carpark B in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II. As part of the Army's adoption of the park as The Army Green Park, two decommissioned M114 Artillery Guns and an AMX-13 Light Tank are displayed in the park to provide points of interest.

The design of the park takes full advantage of the natural vegetation and topography of the site. It offers fitness enthusiasts 20 fitness stations, nature groups a nature trail where they can enjoy pitcher plants and wild orchids, families a chance to enjoy a stroll around the natural ponds teeming with turtles and Japanese Koi, and birdwatchers a chance to catch a glimpse of the sunbirds, doves, squirrels, lizards, and white-crested laughing thrushes along the 280 metre long canopy walking which links the park to the museum, Reflections of Bukit Chandu.

In the month of July 2006, mountain bikers will be able to enjoy an additional new feature - one of the most challenging mountain biking trails Singapore has to offer!

The Kent Ridge Mountainbike Trail is the result of many months of hard manual labour, blood, sweat and tears invested by SACA, NParks and members of the MTB cycling community in making this trail happen! The following persons were instrumental in the creation of this trail :-

* Alvin Francis Lok, NParks Manager, Kent Ridge Park
* Liyana Zolpakar, NParks
* Max Mager, SACA General Manager
* Lim HuiMin, SACA Coach
* Nik Ho, Papa Smurf of Smurf Bike Clinic fame

with the assistance of :-
* Chew Eng Seng, SACA Mountainbike Cyclist
* Ang Kee Ming, SACA Road Cyclist
* Justin Cheong, SACA Road Cyclist
* Yap Chi Wei, Wheelsareturning
* Lee Chuen Ling, SACA MTB Subcommittee
* Renhao, SACA MTB Subcommittee
* All the banglas who toiled daily under the supervision of NParks and SACA

For more information about the Kent Ridge Park, please go to the NParks website, Habitatnews website and Mindef website.

Information as at 6 July 2006

The trail will be open for an Smurf Jamboree Ride on Sunday, 9 July 2006 to introduce mountain bikers to the new trail (please sign up for the jamboree ride to avoid trail crowding).

After the ride, a Smurf Bike Clinic will be conducted. If you wish to sign up for this bike clinic, please sign up on this website: http://asia.groups.yahoo.com/group/smurfs_bike_clinics. Remember to click on the ‘database’ link to sign up so that the Smurfs can anticipate the number of people coming and activate enough smurfs!

If you do not wish to sign up for the orientation ride or the bike clinic but wish to practise on the trail, we would appreciate your cooperation in riding after the clinic to avoid any potential bottlenecks.

Meanwhile, we appreciate your cooperation in not riding on the trail under construction is over as there are dangerous and sharp items lying around in this very narrow trail and we will not be held responsible if you are injured by these items. Your unexpected presence during this period (in particular if you are riding) may also cause injury to the trailbuilders who are using these dangerous items. Thank you in advance for being considerate.

 Trail Construction and Maintenance

The Kent Ridge Mountain Bike Trail is still under construction and we appreciate your patience in staying off the trail until it is unofficially open to the public on Sunday, 9 July 2006 when the Smurf Jamboree Ride will be conducted. The objective of the Smurf Jamboree Ride are twofold :-

Ride Objective 1 – To garner feedback from a representative sample of intermediate-level mountain bikers

Other than the trail designers, those attending the clinic will be the first group to ride the trail – One of the objectives of this ride is to garner feedback on the trail design and trail features as well as potential danger areas which the trailbuilders may have overlooked. With your feedback, we aim to continuously improve trail ‘flow’ and safety. However do note that this trail is intended to be more technically demanding than BT.

Ride Objective 2 – To establish a trail community within the wider population of bikers

The few trailbuilders working on the preliminary stage of the trailbuilding project actually learnt a lot. The bikers got to understand trail construction techniques, erosion prevention, drainage and other ecologically friendly aspects of trail work while non-bikers learnt a lot about flow lines, drop offs, skinnies etc. Hopefully, some of you would be keen to join in the volunteer effort that made this trail possible in the first place.

There may be more trailwork to be done to extend the trail after the race and to thereafter maintain the biketrail. If you are interested in helping out, please contact mtb@cycling.org.sg and we'll keep you in the loop on future trailbuilding and trail maintenance events.

Meanwhile, we are still working on the trail and test-riding section by section. If the trailbuilders see anyone on the trail prior to Sunday, 9 July 2006, that biker personally agrees to volunteer him / herself as a bangla for the day and have his/her bike impounded until he /she puts in 3 days of trail working time!!!

NOTICE FROM NPARKS : Please note that the Mountainbike Trail will be closed after the competition so as to allow further works to be carried out on the trail. For your own safety, please refrain from using the trail until further notice.
